Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has requested New Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Waheed to ensure the safety of the former President Mohamed Nasheed.
A media release issued by the Office of the Presidential Spokesman, Bandula Jayasekera said that President Rajapaksa has instructed IGP N.K. Illangakoon to provide security to the wife of former Maldivian President who had arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday (08 Feb).
It went on to say that President Rajapaksa had inquired about his safety from former Maldivian President Nasheed via a telephone conference today (09 Feb).
An arrest warrant was issued for Ex-Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed and his former defence minister by the Criminal court in Male.
Nasheed alleges that on Tuesday he was forced to resign "at gunpoint" by police and army officers in a coup. He said the move was planned with the knowledge of Waheed Hassan, his former vice president who has now replaced him.
