According to the Police, discussions between the Police and the National Child Protection Authority have taken place and it has been agreed that all school van drivers should be 30 years and over in age.
In addition to this police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana stated that emphasis was also given, during the discussions, to provide school van drivers with a special uniform.
He stated that these decisions will be put into action aimed at providing a proper school transport service.
The move comes days after eight school children were injured after a school van collided with a bus in Mount Lavinia.
President Rajapaksa ordering a report on the incident instructed authorities to ‘uplift’ the standards of school transportation as well as implement a process to regularize school van services.
