Sri Lanka will host the 58th session of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) in September this year. A high level delegation from the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is visiting the country to look into the Organizational aspects of this event.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association was established in 1911. It is an organization represented by 54 countries of the Commonwealth including Australia, Canada, South Africa, India and Sri Lanka. The main objectives of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Union are promoting good governance, democracy and protection of human rights in member countries.
Speaker Chamal Rajapakse was elected as the Chairman of the Union at the 57thsession of the CPA held in London.
Over 800 representatives are expected to attend the 58th session to be held in Colombo from 7th to 15th September. The Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Allen Hasselhurst and the General Secretary William Sheja and other members of the delegation met Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne on Tuesday morning and held discussions.
They also held discussions with Speaker Chamal Rajapakse at the Parliamentary Complex with regard to preliminary arrangements of the 58th CPA sessions. The Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody also attended this discussion.
